The UK is widely considered the birthplace of the co-operative movement and the first successful co-op shop was opened in 1844 in Rochdale, North West England.
A global phenomenon was born from these somewhat humble beginnings; today the co-operative movement secures the livelihoods of over three billion people worldwide, employing more than 20% more people than multinational corporations.
The original site of this little co-op shop is now home to the Rochdale Pioneers Museum, which attracts visitors from all around the world. In preparation for the International Year of Co-operatives this fascinating landmark is being restored, refurbished and extended, meaning thousands more can enjoy learning about the UK's contribution to the history of co-operative thinking
