We're campaigning with WWF-UK to stop Toxic Fuels expansion. Read about our campaign:
Political engagement – We're engaging with the UK Government to introduce mandatory greenhouse gas reporting, which would discourage tar sands investment, and the European Union to keep tar sands fuel out of Europe.
Shareholder and investor engagement – investment by oil companies in Toxic Fuels poses a major financial risk to banks, pension funds and other investors. We have been engaging directly with oil companies and other investors to highlight the risks involved including co-tabling shareholder resolutions at oil company AGMS. More about our Ethical Policies.
Support for the Beaver Lake Cree - we have been championing the cause of the Beaver Lake
Cree since February 2009. We see the Beaver Lake Cree’s challenge as perhaps the best hope we have to stop
the expansion of the tar sands.
Public awareness raising:
Tarnished Earth street gallery – The Co-operative presents a spectacular tar sands exhibition, working together with WWF-UK and Greenpeace
BBC Documentary 'Tar Wars' - In 2009, the BBC accompanied us to visit the Beaver Lake Cree and explore see the tar sands development for themselves.
As part of our new revolutionary Ethical Operating Plan we will broaden our campaign against unconventional fossil fuels to encompass solutions such as community energy. Find out more - join the revolution.
Why we're campaigning
We’re campaigning to stop toxic fuels expansion because we know tackling climate change is important to our customers.
The Co-operative Bank has had an Ethical Policy position on fossil fuels and renewables
since 1998. Since then we’ve declined over £108 million worth of business that conflicts with this position. In our recent
Ethical Policy review, 90% of customers voted to support the following statement:
“We will not finance any business whose core activity contributes to global climate change, via the
extraction or production of fossil fuels, with an extension to the distribution of those fuels that have a higher global
warming impact (e.g. tar sands and certain biofuels)."
The Co-operative Insurance has had an Ethical Engagement Policy since 2005, which includes
a statement on environmental sustainability, supported by 94% of customers:
“The Co-operative Investments will encourage business to reduce reliance on fossil fuels – which
contribute to climate change – and increase their use of renewable energy and energy efficiency.”
The Policy directs how The Co-operative Insurance and Investments use their influence to push for positive change within
the businesses in which they invest.
