This is an historic time for co-operation and The Co-operative. Despite pressure in the UK economy, we have continued to do what we do best:  provide our members and customers with excellent products and services...

Led by our members, we've made considerable progress on our Community Plan, which re-states our commitment to three main areas: Inspiring Young People, Tackling Global Poverty and Combating Climate Change.

We're inspiring young people to change their world

VO

When young people are presented with real opportunities the results can be truly remarkable.

...we push into full frame to see FOOTAGE OF STREETGAMES AND TRUTH ABOUT YOUTH

The Co-operative Streetgames Young Volunteers helps disadvantaged young people to develop sports and community leadership skills.

And the new Truth About Youth grants programme  supports organizations around the UK that enable young people to make positive contributions in their local communities.

We've joined the Votes @ 16 coalition to campaign for the voting age to be lowered so that young people are more engaged with society.

Our Green Schools activities are changing the way young people see the world

VO:

Installing green energy solutions in schools, promoting walking buses and teaching school children about sustainable tourism is showing future generations practical and positive solutions.

TACKLING GLOBAL POVERTY

VO:

We're also hard at work helping communities around the world to tackle poverty.

Our Somerfield Colleague speaks to camera.

We've made Fairtrade accessible to millions more shoppers

VO:

Our integration with Somerfield means that our Fairtrade products are available in hundreds more stores, making them accessible to millions more UK consumers, and benefiting thousands more Fairtrade producers and workers. 

Meanwhile we're providing extra investment to communities that need it the most:

Development funds for our Fairtrade sugar producers in Malawi.

Establishing funeral co-operatives in South Africa.

And promoting co-operative links between hoteliers and farmers in Turkey, through the Travel Foundation.

COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE

VO:

We’re working hard to combat climate change...

We project WIND TURBINE  footage across and to one side of our Travel Colleague, leaving room for graphics.

VO:

As well as being one of the world's largest purchasers of renewable energy, we're becoming more energy efficient every year.

Meanwhile our Toxic Fuels campaign challenges the development of carbon intensive toxic fuels such as Tar Sands. In support of this, members came out across the UK to mark the launch of the powerful new film Dirty Oil

VO:

Members and their families also joined the Wave climate change march, the biggest mobilization of our membership base in recent times. And we're making great progress on our other environmental objectives

Food colleague:

We've hit our target on reducing packaging a year ahead of schedule...

ETHICAL FINANCE

We've seen a 38% increase in current account openings.

VO:

This was a landmark year for Co-operative Financial Services, against the backdrop of the banking crisis; we completed the merger with Britannia, relaunched the Bank's unique customer lead Ethical Policy, and extended it to Britannia. We launched new sustainable investment products. And created a new Social Banking Unit, which looks to provide £2 billion of finance for community housing, schools, charities and renewable energy projects.

We transition back to the studio and see the same Bank Colleague who speaks to camera and then remains in situ.

VO:

Through our Skills4Schools programme, we're using our expertise to transfer key skills to young people, helping to educate a new generation on areas such as future employability and money management.

OUR CO-OPERATIVE DIFFERENCE

We've now got 5 million members across the UK

Our Values and Principles have given us great strength at a time of reduced confidence in business, and today, our customers, members and colleagues are as active as ever in events, initiatives and community activities.

Thousands have taken part in events to raise money for charity, raising over £3.7 million for the Royal National Institute for the Deaf and £3m for Macmillan.

...and thousands more members have supported our popular Plan Bee campaign, raising awareness of bee decline in the UK.

Through the Co-operative Enterprise Hub, we're investing millions of pounds over the next few years to support the wider Co-operative sector.

We're working hard to bring the values and principals of co-operation into the educational system for a whole new generation.
