video transcript - Love Food Hate Waste

vox pop interviews – 23/06/09

INTERVIEWER:  What did you think to the event?

RESPONDENT 1:  Absolutely fantastic.  Really informative.  Really clear and some really good ideas to take away.

RESPONDENT 2:  Lots of advice.  Lots of good information.  Things I wouldn’t have considered using with other different ingredients as well.

RESPONDENT 3:  Yeah I thought it was very successful.  Especially because he was up cooking it and I really enjoyed it.

RESPONDENT 4:  I thought it was really good, very informative.  I liked the messages that were coming across.  Makes you think.  Obviously I have a family myself, so again, I’m very conscious about the amount of shopping and what you’re not using.  It’s nice to get some ideas from Mark and, you know, some messages.  I think about just minimising that waste and the impact it’s obviously going to have both on my pocket, as well as the health and the family.

RESPONDENT 5:  I like the way it was set out.  The way he explained everything to you and I think it’s a good thing, especially for the Co-op to go out and sell this to the customers.

RESPONDENT 6:  It’s been really interesting and informative.  There’s so many different things that I didn’t realise; how we can use the food that we’re wasting.  There are so many simple and easy ways that we can actually do that, so that’s one of the main things which I’ve got from today.

RESPONDENT 7:  It was good to see a range of leftovers that you could use for an everyday meal.

RESPONDENT 8:  I thought it was really good actually.  I like the way that it was really simple.  Like how he said they’ve not used chef’s ingredients and chef’s equipment which I thought was really useful because that’s very true, when you see things on telly it’s not necessarily what you’d actually cook so that was good, I like that.  I think it’s good that it’s quite interactive and it’s not just boring or anything.  I think it’s good how interactive it is and it’s quite lively which is good.

INTERVIEWER:  Is there anything you would improve?

RESPONDENT 1:  Well no, considering it’s the first time that Mark’s done it, I think it’s a really, really good event.  It’s not, and I think as well if an audience was watching it, it wouldn’t be very intimidating for them to watch and I do think a lot of people would get up and be involved in it because it seems really relaxed.

RESPONDENT 2:  6.7 million tonnes, I find that hard to understand, what does that actually look like?  So I’m asking if maybe it can be put into relation of how big is that compared to Wembley Stadium because I think if you say to customers (people have seen how big Wembley Stadium is, or in Scotland if I say Hamden Stadium people know what size that is) it could fill Wembley Stadium three times well that’s unbelievable, that’s a huge fact.  One of the things that I’m going to use you know; some of the figures that Mark gave earlier about how many tomatoes you know that’s  nearly the equivalent of every person in Scotland throwing away a tomato a day.

RESPONDENT 3:  Just with that main screen sometimes you can see the work going on in the middle, but just to the left of you can’t always see with regards to what’s going on with the smoothie making, so maybe a bit more focus on what’s going on at the sides of the event to sort of see what’s going on with the food but other than that it’s been fantastic.

RESPONDENT 4:  I think maybe the ingredients was whizzed through quite quickly, maybe have it on the screen when he’s cooking saying this is this, this is this but I thought it was very good.

RESPONDENT 5:  Or maybe, he came out with three meals in that short period of time which is good because you can see, but maybe even if it was just less food but just reinforce how easy that was because on the screen it might not have picked up how easy that salad was because it was just [moves hands quickly to demonstrate high speed of making the salad] salad.  So maybe if it was just two meals but everybody could walk away and cook those two meals, that’s probably better.

INTERVIEWER: How do you see this being rolled out into regional stores?

RESPONDENT 1:  There’s opportunities for us to communicate the messages on the till screens and on the radio and on our food packaging.  I mean we’ve already got it on the food bags, possibly leaflets in store and word of mouth.  If we’re rolling this out with store staff there’s opportunity for store staff to talk to customers and share sort of hints and tips that way as well.

RESPONDENT 2:  I’m impressed that we’re following through reducing that, you know as Debby said at the beginning of that introduction you know we’re having more half-price or better than half-price offers rather than having buy one get one free.  So I think I’m really pleased that we’re following through committing to reducing the waste, so I think that it’s going to be a key message so I think that will go down well with our customers and our members.

RESPONDENT 3:  We’ve worked with Mark before and we’ve actually taken him into the food stores, so we’ve had the demonstrations in store and they’ve been really, really successful.  We could even do that, carry on doing that.
