Mr Marks, who lives locally, was joined by school children from Trinity All Saints Primary School for the ceremony at the store in the town’s new 5Rise Shopping Centre. He then officially opened the £5 million shopping centre where The Co-operative is the anchor tenant, by unveiling a commemorative plaque.

The Co-operative store features the consumer-owned retailer's new business identity, which aims to highlight improved service standards across its 5,300 outlets in the UK, including its travel, pharmacy, funerals and bank branches, as well as its commitment to supporting local communities and ethical trading policies.

The store offers contemporary décor, a spacious layout, ‘Access for All’ automatic doors, eco-refrigeration, self-service checkouts, an in-store bakery and deli counter. The emphasis is on fresh foods, with a wide range available including hot food.

Mr Marks said: “The Co-operative is committed to supporting and investing in the local communities where it trades and I am delighted shoppers in Bingley have a new
Co-operative store offering such a marvellous shopping experience.

“At a time when consumers are looking for both value and values in business, The Co-operative’s brand has become even more relevant and distinctive.  As a native of Bradford, I am delighted that we will be serving the people of Bingley for many years to come.”
