The Co-operative unveils its £22M state-of-the-art distribution centre in East Midlands

April 22, 2013

The Co-operative Group will complete the overhaul of its entire UK-wide logistics network with the official opening of its state-of-the-art distribution centre in north Derbyshire, on Monday, 22 April, which will create around 300 new jobs and employ 1,060 people.

The launch of Castlewood CDC, following a £22m capital investment, concludes a project started in 2004 to transform and modernise the distribution network to keep pace with the significant growth of The Co-operative’s food business and improve service to its stores and customers.

The 480,000sq ft multi-temperature depot, situated just off junction 28 on the M1, is now ramping up and will be fully operational by October 2013, when it will employ around 1,060 staff. It will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to service 528 Co-operative food stores in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, through more than 3,600 deliveries per week.

To mark the occasion, Steve Murrells, Chief Executive, The Co-operative Food, and Paul Wardle, Distribution General Manager at Castlewood, will unveil a plaque at the new depot in South Normanton, along with Sean Toal, Chief Operating Officer and Mark Hale, Director of Food IS and Supply Chain.

Special guests will include Councillor Eion Watts, Leader of Bolsover Council; Councillor Alan Tomlinson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Bolsover Council and Wes Lumley, Chief Executive, Bolsover Council, who will also help bury a time capsule to commemorate the launch.

Steve Murrells, Chief Executive, The Co-operative Food, said: “The opening of Castlewood marks a major milestone for The Co-operative and the completion of a radical revamp of our entire logistics network.

“We’ve invested £22 million into Castlewood to create an efficient facility, which will not only create 300 new jobs and boost the local economy, but it also represents The Co-operative Food’s ambition for the future.”

The depot, which received more than 2,200 applications for the 300 new warehouse and transport positions created, occupies a 30 acre site and the build took more than 300,000 man hours to complete. It will have a fleet of 273 vehicles, which will deliver more than one million cases per week.

Castlewood also features several energy-efficient initiatives, including rainwater harvesting to reduce water demand on site and movement detection lighting, which has helped secure an “excellent” rating from BREEAM, the world’s leading design and assessment method for sustainable buildings.

Steve Murrells added: “This investment in Castlewood is the final piece in the jigsaw for our logistics operation following a period of phenomenal change. The massive investment in systems, facilities and people has resulted in a better working environment, increased efficiencies and productivity across our entire logistics operation, servicing more than 2,800 stores across the UK.

“The Co-operative now has one national distribution centre in Coventry and nine new multi-temperature state-of-the-art regional distribution centres. Together they will ensure that we are better equipped than ever before to support our food stores, and ensure that we maintain the high level of produce availability and service that Co-operative customers expect.”

Bolsover District Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Councillor Alan Tomlinson, commented: “We worked very closely with The Co-operative and are delighted that they chose South Normanton as the location for their regional distribution centre. This is a massive investment in the area, an investment that has already seen around 300 jobs created for local people.

“The Co-operative saw the benefits this site offered in terms of its location, its infrastructure and the enormous potential it has for further development or expansion and having such a well renowned business such as The Co-operative on this site will help us attract more businesses to the area, which in turn will help us create more job opportunities and wealth for local people.”
