Merchant Wind project

supporting the construction of six new wind turbines

In September 2004 our Merchant Wind project was established, whereby a £4 million eight-year contract was agreed with green electricity generator Ecotricity.

The Merchant Wind projectThis was the first contract of its kind, and has financed the construction of six new wind turbines in Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire, which will specifically supply The Co-operative.

The turbines generate nine million units of pollution-free electricity per year, enough to supply the equivalent of approximately 3,000 homes – and generates a saving of over 3,870 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

By helping to stimulate demand in the renewable energy market, we are contributing to the UK’s target of sourcing 15% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2015.
