The Co-operative Travel
The formation of a travel retail joint venture between Thomas Cook plc, The Co-operative Group and Midlands Co-operative has created the UK’s largest network of travel branches.
The joint venture is not a co-operative or mutual organisation but has use of The Co-operative Travel brand. Employees working in The Co-operative Travel branches are no longer Co-operative Group or Midlands Co-operative employees, but employees of the joint venture. The new company is fully supported by the Peterborough-based Thomas Cook corporate and central functions, which include training and development, property, legal, marketing, along with PR and Communications.
The Co-operative Group firmly believes that a partnership arrangement has helped to retain the heritage and ethics of The Co-operative brand and ensure the consistency of message. At the heart of this arrangement are good working relations with senior managers within Thomas Cook to create a successful partnership approach.
We operate over 400 high street travel agencies, a business travel operation, call centres, a specialist cruise operation and in excess of 600 travel homeworkers.
A number of senior business leaders from The Co-operative Group sit on the joint venture’s board. These include Deputy Group Chief Executive Martyn Wates and Director of Marketing Gill Barr. In addition Group Chief Executive Peter Marks sits on the Thomas Cook board. They work to ensure that the ethos of the wider Co-operative brand is retained within the joint venture whilst also positively influencing the management and reputation within the Thomas Cook culture and structure.
