In pursuit of sustainable development, we seek to deliver value to our stakeholders in an ecologically sustainable and socially responsible manner. Our purpose is to serve our members by carrying on business as a co-operative in accordance with co-operative Values and Principles.
We stand apart from other major businesses in the UK as an organisation owned by our members, who democratically control the business. One of our strategic aims is to respond to our members and share our profits, which forms one of our business Key Performance Indicators.
Our long-standing commitment to supporting co-operatives has seen us support over 1,000 co-operatives via The Co-operative Enterprise Hub, our flagship programme that provides free advice, training and access to finance.
We are one of the largest private sector employers in the UK and our employees are vital for our sustainable business success. Customer satisfaction is also a business priority. And we report on our engagement with suppliers in a stand-alone Report section for the first time this year.
Unusually for a large, commercial organisation, we run campaigns, which involve our members and customers and include a large element of public policy intervention.
Our Ethical Plan commitments include:
- We will continue to share our profits with members, and encourage 500,000 new members to join us each year.
- We will provide an additional £1m of support to co-operative enterprise in 2013, maintain a £500,000 Community Shares Fund and launch a facility enabling small co-operatives, such as football supporters trusts, to access low cost, green electricity on the back of The Co-operative’s bulk purchase arrangements.
- The remuneration of senior staff is influenced by the degree to which The Co-operative is viewed as a leading champion of corporate social responsibility in the UK.
- Uniquely in the UK, we will continue to use our influence to campaign for a more equitable and sustainable world, engaging members and customers in our social goals and campaigning, and will always be open about such lobbying and its outcome.
