Walking Buses

a healthy way to cut your carbon emissions

Walking to school gives children a really healthy start to their day. It also cuts down on car journeys, so it’s a great way for families to reduce carbon emissions. If 15 children who were previously driven to school walked to school for a year, it would save 4,800 car journeys and 4.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide – the equivalent of six flights to New York. With the school run accounting for 18% of morning rush hour traffic, walking to school can also have a positive impact on local congestion.

However, many parents are understandably concerned about their children walking to school on their own. So, as part of Green Schools Revolution, we help schools to set up walking buses – groups of children who walk to school together, accompanied by two adult volunteers – by providing them with a package of materials. These comprise high visibility vests for children and volunteers, reflective snap bands, a banner for the school railings and promotional posters.
