Podcast FAQs
What is a podcast?
A podcast is a series of digital media files (usually either digital audio or video) that is made available for download via web syndication.
Podcasting lets you automatically receive the latest episode of your chosen programme as soon as it's available, so you can take your favourite programmes with you on the move and listen wherever and whenever you like.
You can subscribe to receive a podcast, which is delivered to your computer each time a new one is available. Most podcasts are free, and you can stop receiving ones you have subscribed to at any time. If you'd rather not subscribe, you can download episodes of a podcast series individually.
In order to subscribe for a podcast, you need an internet connection (broadband is advisable) and a piece of podcast software which is usually available free of charge. Once you have installed this software, it will check for new episodes of your chosen series and automatically download new episodes for you.
You can then listen to podcast episodes on your computer, or transfer them to a portable device, such as an mp3 player. An MP3 is a popular digital music format for sound files, that are small in size but still reasonably high quality. This makes it suitable format for downloading from the web – audio files can be reduced to around a tenth of their normal size without significant loss of quality.
What software do I need?
You need to install a piece of software which will search the web to find the latest episode and automatically deliver it to your computer. This software is usually free, and popular ones include iTunes, Juice and Doppler.
Do I need an iPod or other MP3 player to listen to my podcasts?
Anyone with a computer connected to the internet can download and listen to MP3 files. You will need a media player on your computer, eg Windows Media Player which many PCs come with. You will also need speakers or headphones.
The advantage of transferring downloads onto a portable iPod or MP3 player is that you can then listen to them on the move.
