Assisting community groups and co-operatives
Supporting communities is a crucial role for co-operatives and is at the heart of our activities and our co-operative heritage.

The Community Plan
In 2008, The Co-operative gave £11.5 million to the community. This was used to support a wide range of programmes, such as enabling young people to take part in sports volunteering, and inviting children to our farms to learn about healthy eating.

Funds and Foundations
Along with investing money into our own projects, we assist community groups and co-operatives through our funds and foundations. Many of our 82,000 employees also volunteer and take part in fundraising initiatives to make a difference in their local communities.

The Co-operative uses the London Benchmarking Group reporting model to calculate our contributions to the community. The LBG model provides a standardised way of managing and measuring a company’s community involvement.
