urban beekeeping

The Co-operative, as part of Plan Bee, is running a pilot project in Manchester to introduce hives on allotments. The Co-operative is funding beekeeper training and purchasing starter packs including bee colonies and hives for the Manchester allotment holders that are attending the training.

Manchester pilot

The project is being delivered by a Manchester-bsed beekeeper, Paul Peacock. To date over 100 people have attended beekeeping training including a number of Parks Officers from Manchester City Council who are interested in keeping hives in Manchester Parks. The Co-operative opened its first apiary to support practical training for new beekeepers in Wythenshawe Park in August.

As a result of this pilot, three million bees will be introduced on allotments across Manchester by summer 2010. The project will be expanded to London and Scotland in 2010.
