The Wave

Thanks to everyone who joined The Wave on Saturday 5 December – what a day it was!

We believe that over 2,500 Co-operative Members, customers and their families made it to the Wave in London - a fantastic turnout!

Behind the scenes we helped organise 50 coaches and three trains from 28 locations across England and Wales, and had an army of nearly 60 volunteers out on the day.

Estimated numbers for the march itself have varied from 20,000 to 50,000. What we can say for sure is that it was huge – when The Wave had encircled parliament and flowed over Westminster bridge shortly after 3pm, the march was still stretching back past Trafalgar Square and up Piccadilly. This was the biggest climate change march ever seen in the UK, and sent a clear message to the world's leaders assembling in Copenhagen for the UN summit.

At The Wave in Scotland, The Co-operative Membership team marched with hundreds of members, giving out our placards and badges. Up to 7,000 are thought to have turned out for the march.

For photos and news from The Wave, and our response to the UN climate talks in Copenhagen:

We teamed up with Oxfam and the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition, organisers of The Wave, to get as many Co-operative Members as possible signed up and travelling to London to help make this the biggest climate change march in history.

why did we join The Wave?

The Wave took place days before the crucial UN climate change talks in Copenhagen. It sent a strong message to world leaders that a safe and fair deal must be agreed in order for dangerous levels of climate change to be avoided. However, world leaders did not go as far as agreeing a new global deal to combat climate change, whilst protecting the world's poorest communities. It is essential they do so in 2010. Find out what we want from a global climate change deal.
