what we want from a global climate change deal

Despite making some progress at the UN climate change talks in Copenhagen, world leaders did not go as far as agreeing a new global deal to combat climate change.

time is running out

We believe it is essential that the world's leaders agree an ambitious deal in 2010, that is safe and fair.

safe:

  • global temperature rises must be kept below 2°C
  • global emissions must peak by 2015 and reductions of 50-80% achieved by 2050
  • atmospheric concentrations of CO2e must be limited to a maximum of 450 parts per million (ppm)
  • emissions from developed countries must be reduced by 25-40% by 2020

fair:

  • at least $200 billion of finance must be provided annually from developed to developing countries to enable the switch to a low carbon economy and to help poorer countries adapt to the climate change that even 2°C of warming brings
  • this finance must be in addition to existing aid commitments made by developed countries to tackle global poverty
