from farm to fork
welcome to From Farm To Fork!
How much do you know about where your food comes from?
Can you tell the difference between wheat and barley?
Do you know how your bread is made?
Have you ever planted crops and watched them grow?
From Farm to Fork is an exciting outdoor learning experience for primary schoolchildren.
The From Farm to Fork project was developed at Stoughton, Oadby Lodge Farm in Leicestershire by The Co-operative farm manager, Nick and his wife Michelle. They thought it would be a good idea to invite local schoolchildren to the farm to show them how cereals are produced and link this to the food they eat.
Due to the project’s success, From Farm to Fork has been extended to more farms across the country; since 2005, over 40,000 children have visited a Co-operative Farm.
From Farm to Fork allows children to experience the world beyond the classroom through a supervised farm visit. Primary schoolchildren will improve their understanding of where their food comes from and how it is grown.
The farm visits aim to inspire children to get passionate about food, about fresh, good quality ingredients and cooking with them. We hope that children who have visited will be encouraged to make healthier lifestyle choices about the food they eat.
For some, it will be the first time they have experienced the countryside and all it has to offer. We hope they will leave with a greater appreciation for the greater outdoors, gaining an understanding of the importance of farming, both in supplying food and protecting wildlife within its natural habitat.
farm activities
We aim to meet the learning outcomes of the Curriculum. On a typical visit children learn how crops are grown and the links with healthy food.
