About the farm:
Whitsome Farm near Duns, Berwickshire, is our office base for the Borders in Scotland. We contract farm land in the Borders on behalf of several clients. The land type across the Borders estate varies hugely; from light sands by the Tweed to a heavy loam further inland. This is some of the best farmland in Scotland with phenomenal views on the land by the coast, which has been classified by the Countryside Agency as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
From Farm to Fork site?
The Borders From Farm to Fork project is based at The Hirsel Estate, Coldstream, by kind permission of the Earl of Home CVO; CBE, who has been a long standing client of The Co-operative Farms in the Borders.
This is a good example of a successful joint co-operative arrangement between farmer and client. Sally Fleming, project leader, is based in one of the renovated buildings at the old Hirsel Farmstead, which has been converted into a craft centre, museum, tearooms and children’s play area.
The Estate also supply an employee part time to help with the outside farming aspect of the From Farm to Fork project, which allows Sally to concentrate on inside activities and healthy cookery using home grown produce.
At The Hirsel there are pedigree Highland cattle, old established woodlands, and plots of wheat, potatoes, sunflowers and maize, which the children love to see and explore.
