About the farm:
We have been farming at this Co-operative owned estate since 1918. Down Ampney is the home of The Co-operative’s first ever vineyard. In May 2010, 6,240 vines were planted on around six acres of land. The vineyard will mainly produce the Ortega grape, which grows well in our climate and will make a white wine. Gloucestershire is one of the UK’s leading wine-growing areas. Cirencester was a town in Roman times, and it’s likely that wine was grown in the area then. A wood next to The Co-operative’s Farm is called Vines Brake, suggesting it was once home to a vineyard. Unfortunately we will have to wait up to four years before the vines produce enough grapes to make wine to sell in our stores.
