How is pesticide usage controlled?
Each approved pesticide can only be used for its specific purposes
Once a pesticide has been approved for used in the E.U. then it is recommended for use by a trained Agronomist who chooses the best pesticide that will control either the weed, disease or pest. This is after all other non-pesticide methods of control have been looked at.
Only specific pesticides can be used on specific crops. There are also regulations on the amount that can be used, when it can be applied, and the time that must elapse between application and harvest.
The label must include all the above information, along with any precautions that must be taken to protect users and the environment. The label also carries storage instructions.
Many pesticides can only be bought from specialist outlets, and all users of agricultural pesticides must have certificated training.
