Pesticides allowed "with permission only"
The following pesticides can still be used on The Co-operative Food produce, but only after the grower has received written authorisation from us. Permission is only granted for an individual crop grown by a particular farmer, and only after checking to make sure there is no suitable alternative. Each individual use has to be approved.
It is important to remember that some of these pesticides are already banned by legislation in the UK and Europe, and so their use there is not allowable. However, they may be permitted in other parts of the world where pests and conditions are substantially different. Our aim though is to work towards their general removal worldwide.
We are not able to include these on our banned list just yet. We need to gather more information about their use and the alternatives that are available. The lists are continually updated as evidence becomes available.
Those pesticides marked NNI are neonicotinoids that have been temporarily prohibited because of their suspected link to the declining bee population in the UK and worldwide.
