Bananas
Get the pick of the bunch with our Fairtrade bananas
In 2000, The Co-operative introduced the UK’s first Fairtrade banana.
Our Fairtrade bananas from Ghana help to buy workers everything , from boots to bicycles
We have since followed this with pineapples, mangoes, grapes and oranges. So whatever your preference, pick up a bunch of Fairtrade bananas - it means a fairer price is paid to the producer and doesn’t mean you’re paying over the odds yourself. So it’s fair for everyone.
Going bananas in Ghana
The very first Fairtrade bananas we sold were grown from farmers of Volta River Estates Ltd (VREL) in Ghana.

Since then VREL has continued to be supported by our customers who choose to buy Fairtrade bananas. As a result, workers and their communities have benefited from lots of different projects: school children have been provided with uniforms, while workers have received mosquito nets and boots to protect them from snakes, and bicycles so they don’t have to walk the long distance to work.

There has also been investment in new school buildings and computer facilities for pupils, to help them to get out of the poverty cycle, as well as water and sanitation provision.
