Fairtrade Foundation
A registered charity, established in 1992 which seeks to alleviate poverty in developing countries by encouraging Fairtrade. It does this by licensing a Fairtrade mark or label to producers and brands which meet Fairtrade standards. www.fairtrade.org.uk

FLO Fairtrade Labelling Organisation
Established in 1997, FLO is a world-wide umbrella organisation of 17 national labelling initiatives, an independent certification body which sets Fairtrade standards and monitors producer and trader compliance with Fairtrade criteria. At the present time, FLO labels seven products produced in 30 countries of the South. FLO maintains registers of producers who meet Fairtrade criteria and involves these producers in its deliberations through consultative assemblies. It is based in Germany. www.fairtrade.net
IFAT International Federation for Alternative Trade
A global network of Alternative (or Fair) Trading Organisations and producer organisations, established in the Netherlands in 1989. IFAT is a coalition to promote Fairtrade and a forum for the exchange of information. It links and strengthens producer organisations from the South and alternative trade organisations (ATOs) from both the North and South. IFAT organises the biennial Fairtrade international Conference and organises regular Fairtrade meetings, seminars and workshops all round the world. It is based in Oxfordshire. www.ifat.org
ILO - International Labour Organisation
A United Nations agency, based in Geneva, which sets internationally recognised labour standards - the basis of many Fairtrade and Ethical Trade guidelines. It was founded in 1919. www.ilo.org
Max Havelaar
A leading Fairtrade brand in the Netherlands. Named after a pioneer Dutch campaigner against the exploitation of coffee workers in what is now Indonesia (then a Dutch colony). The website is in English and Dutch. www.maxhavelaar.nl
NEWS! - Network of World Shops
Network of European World Shops (NEWS!) Established in 1994. Umbrella organisation for approximately 2,500 Fairtrade Shops in 13 member countries including the UK. BAFTS is the UK member. www.worldshops.org
Traidcraft
Founded in 1979, is one of the UK's largest independant Fairtrade organisations, selling food and craft products from nearly 100 producer groups based in 31 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Traidcraft is based on Christian principles, works with people of all faiths and none. Traidcraft plc’s sales are now worth more than £12 million a year and in 2001/02, it made a profit of £119,000. www.traidcraft.co.uk
