tuna sourcing policy

The Co-operative shares the objectives of all concerned in the fishing industry that supplies of fish need to be protected for the long term, by means of sustainable fisheries management practices

As of December 2011 all of our own-brand skipjack tuna comes from fisheries employing pole and line or hand line fishing method. Pole and line fishing is a selective way of catching tuna without the bycatch issues associated with other catch methods.

We are also signed up to an agreement with the international conservation body Earth Island Institute monitor that fishing equipment and practices used to catch our tuna does not target dolphins.

Reviewing the policy

We regularly review our fish sourcing policy, assessing it against a wide variety of information sources. Our approach is to closely monitor the latest scientific advice, taking into account the views expressed by non-government organisations and other interested parties such as marine conservation groups.
