healthier choices
At the Co-operative we want you to make it easier for you to choose healthier products, and to recognise those that should be eaten in moderation, in order to help you achieve the right balance and variety of foods that are important for good health.
So we've adopted the traffic light system to help you make choosing healthier producs quick and easy.
What the colours mean:
The traffic light systems shows you at a glance if the food you are looking at is low, medium or high in fat, saturated fat, sugars or salt.

Red means HIGH, indicating that the food is high in fat, saturated fat, sugars or salt. It's fine to eat this food occasionally or as a treat, but think about how often you choose it and how much you eat.
Amber means MEDIUM, making it an OK choice. Although going for green is even better
Green means it's LOW, which makes it a healthier option.
As well as rolling out the traffic lights on all our products we have extended and improved our range of healthier options - look out for the green dot on:
Healthier Choice
All products in our Healthier Choice range either:
Contain 3% or less fat, and are calorie and salt controlled so you won't find and red on the traffic light labelling on these items.
or
They have at least 50% less fat, salt or sugar than standard products. If the amount of fat per 100g is in between these figures, that is a medium level of fat.
Green dot messages are all based on the best dietary guidelines:
- Eat more fruit and vegetables
- Base your meals around starchy foods which should be wholgrains if possible
- Choose lower fat options, in particular those lower in saturated fat
- Eat fewer foods that are high in fat and sugar
Fruit and vegetables.
Look out for the 5-a-day message.
And lots of other products!
We have also made it easier for you to identify healthier options across the rest of our range by adding green dots to our packaging such as ready meals, sandwiches and jarred sauces.
