David Phillips scoops carer of the year title

January 19, 2010

Kind-hearted nursing home worker, David Phillips has had his career in caring recognised through winning The Co-operative Funeralcare’s Carer of the Year award.

David, who has been a carer at Amberleigh House Nursing Home in Fazakerley for three years, was one of eight finalists from Merseyside to attend an awards ceremony yesterday.

The Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Andrew Chapman Hodson, presented David with his prize at Leasowe Castle Hotel in Wirral.

Throughout 2009, on a quarterly basis, nursing and retirement home managers throughout Wirral and Liverpool were invited to nominate a member of staff for their outstanding hard work and dedication.

The nominations were judged by local clergy and staff from The Co-operative Funeralcare.

“David goes above and beyond the call of duty.  He has an excellent sense of humour and joins in all events at the home, often dressing up for the occasion,” commented the home’s manager, Debbie Higgins in her nomination.

“He has forged links with the Alzheimer’s Society and has raised over £3,500 this year for it.  He enjoys a challenge and has entered into the Cycle Cuba fund-raising event for the same charity.

“He is much admired and loved by all the residents and their families,” continued Debbie.

As well as a trophy, David received £100 Co-operative vouchers and bed, breakfast and evening meal at the Leasowe Castle Hotel.

Vernon Rhodes, Regional Manager of The Co-operative Funeralcare, said: “It was a hard decision to reach an overall winner as the standard of entries throughout the last year was extremely high.  However, David pipped his fellow finalists to the post with his sheer dedication and compassion for the residents at the home.”

David sets off on his next fund-raising challenge tomorrow, Wednesday, 20 January.
