What to do with ashes?

The Co-operative Funeralcare can provide help, advice and information on what you can do with the ashes of a loved one.

What you choose to do with the ashes of your loved one is a very personal choice. We have recently developed a Report based on research into what people in the UK choose do with ashes. This may help you decide what is appropriate for the ashes of your loved one.

Most popular choices

  • Over half of people in the UK choose to scatter the ashes of a loved one
  • The most popular place to scatter ashes is at a favourite beauty spot such as a mountain peak, woodland, park or beach
  • Many people choose to bury a loved one's ashes at a churchyard, crematorium or woodland burial ground
  • A growing number of people choose to scatter ashes on the sea, lake, river or canal
  • When keeping ashes, people choose to keep them at home on the mantlepiece, in a cupboard, bedroom or buried in the garden
  • A number of people would choose to scatter ashes at their loved one's favourite sports club
  • Some families choose to take ashes to a loved one's favourite holiday location either in the UK or abroad
  • 1 in 5 people don’t know what they would do with a loved one’s ashes.

What rules and regulations are there?

Our research showed that nearly 1 in 10 people choose to scatter the ashes of a loved one on water.

There is a lack of information in the public arena about what can legally be done with ashes. However, we have developed a Report which guides you through the options which are available and provides some hints and tips for scattering, burying or travelling abroad with ashes.
