The Co-operative commitment to the environment

The Co-operative is committed to combating climate change and the building of our new head office in Manchester has given us the opportunity to look at the overall environmental impact of our presence in the city.

Over the last few years The Co-operative has taken a lead, set by its members, to champion campaigns and take action to combat climate change. We have taken bold and far-reaching steps to reduce CO2 emissions across all of our business activities. Our stores and branches are powered by renewable sources of energy and we generate our own electricity through wind farms on our own farmland. We are also reducing our power consumption by setting ourselves, and successfully meeting, extensive and challenging reduction targets.

You can read more about the progress we are making in our latest Sustainability Report which can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

Our new building

Our new building will lead the way in creating an office that has environmental sustainability at the heart of its design.

We will generate our own electricity, locally, through renewable resources and we will ensure that the lighting, heating and ventilation of the building is environmentally outstanding.

The technology we use and a more flexible approach to working will also reduce our carbon emissions.

At present though, the carbon footprint caused by our employees travelling to and from our existing office each day is double that of the planned new building.

We want to take a holistic view of the environmental impact The Co-operative Group makes on the city of Manchester and that includes tackling the carbon created by us travelling to and from work.

Helping you to achieve greener travel

This website aims to promote more sustainable transport methods and provide travel information to employees to support our carbon reduction targets.

Our aim is to provide you with the information you need to make more environmentally sustainable choices about how you travel to and from the Manchester complex, eventually leading to supporting greener travel across our entire business, across the UK.
