We’re at an energy crossroads... Either we carry on scraping the barrel, seeking out evermore difficult-to-reach sources of oil and gas. Or, we embrace a new energy future, harnessing the UK’s vast natural resources of wind, water and solar power.
Clean energy currently contributes about 8% of the UK’s electricity supply, amongst the lowest in Europe. Yet, the UK is lucky to have some of the best renewable resources in the world with enough wind, wave and tidal resources to meet both domestic energy needs and export energy to other countries.
The Co-operative, Greenpeace and WWF-UK are calling on the UK Government to meet its renewable energy goals by creating a strong Green Investment Bank (see more below) that will help raise the money to fund a green energy revolution in communities across the UK.

About the Green Investment Bank
As with any form of energy, developing renewable resources requires major investment. We believe a well funded Green Investment Bank (GIB) is needed to leverage greater investment from the private sector and bring about an Energy Revolution. A GIB that backs community energy would help unlock the scale of private investment required to stimulate a prosperous low carbon future, boost economic recovery, and help make the UK globally competitive. The Government is moving things forward, but slowly – which means the UK is not only missing out on reducing its greenhouse gases further, but also on increased energy security.
