Water

We recognise that there are physical limits to the resources of the Earth (both in terms of generating materials and absorbing waste), and that any business activity that exceeds these limits is, by definition, unsustainable in the long run.

Our goal

Having achieved a 20% reduction since 2008, we will reduce the water consumption across our operations by 30% by 2014.

A water efficiency programme across our 5,000 stores and branches will deliver a 10% reduction in consumption by 2014.

We also encourage our suppliers to practise good water stewardship and consider water when making investment decisions.

Developing World

We support initiatives to help provide improved access to water and sanitation for communties in the developing world. Donations from the sale of The Co-operative's own-brand bottled water, Fairbourne Springs, have funded the installation of PlayPumps in Southern Africa.

To date, these donations have funded access to clean water for over 1 million people. And, as part of our commitments to go Beyond Fairtrade, we are providing access to water and sanitation for Fairtrade farmers and workers in our supply chain, in addition to the benefits they receive from the Fairtrade premium.
