Independent solicitors 'best' for conveyancing work

A legal expert has observed independent solicitors are a must for individuals seeking to buy a new home, warning in-house services offered by sellers represent "a blatant conflict of interests".
thisismoney.co.uk writer Sebastian O'Kelly advises "it cannot be emphasised too strongly" the importance of independent solicitor support, claiming such professionals are much more likely to point out problems with a property and act in the client's best interests.
He argues firms affiliated with a selling agent may not focus on the buyer's needs and desires, as they could stand to make more money if an individual goes ahead with a house purchase.
The legal specialist is commenting on the decision of Lloyds Banking Group to cut the number of conveyancing firms on its panel, in order to focus on larger service providers.
This could affect the impartiality of those who remain in the services of the firm, so individuals may wish to consider all their options before engaging a conveyancing provider.
