Unfair dismissal leads to £7,500 compensation

Employment 29 Nov 2010

A case of unfair dismissal has been won by a former domestic worker fired as a result of malevolent chitchat. Wrongful dismissal has resulted in a compensation payment of almost £7,500 to a woman who was sacked due to malicious gossiping by her former colleagues.

Susana Danio worked as a domestic assistant for Chelsea resident Maire-Chantal over a period of two years, but was made redundant in April in a manner a judge ruled constituted unfair dismissal.

The victim claims colleagues were jealous of her success and popularity with her former employer, from whom she received a raise three months after starting the job.

Central London tribunal judge Angela Stewart ordered wrongful dismissal compensation of £7,442 be paid, saying: "The circumstances were that the claimant was [fired] and had serious and grave allegations of misconduct brought against her, including dishonesty."

As well as the distress caused by such cases, reparations take into account factors such as difficulty finding alternative employment due to the unfavourable way in which the previous contract is terminated.
