Former Underground driver wins at employment tribunal
Employment 09 May 2011

An
employment tribunal has ruled that a former driver on the London Underground was unfairly dismissed.
Eamonn lynch, who drove on the Bakerloo line, told the tribunal that he was sacked as a result of taking part in trade union activities.
However, London Underground claimed that he was dismissed after breaking safety rules.
The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union said that Tube driver members would strike for part of May and June as a protest at the sacking of Mr Lynch and another driver.
"We welcome Eamonn’s victory in the tribunal and we are calling for an immediate meeting with London Underground in the light of the ruling that he was unfairly dismissed for his trade union activities," Bob Crow, general secretary of the RMT, said.
In response, Mike Brown, managing director of London Underground, said that the company would carefully asses the findings that the employment tribunal made.
A case for
unfair dismissal was last month settled out of court before it reached an employment tribunal. The Manchester Evening News reported that Gary Day-Davies was given a £50,000 payout after being sacked from Wentworth High School in Salford.
