Guidelines 'make interns' wage rights clearer'

New guidelines have been laid out making companies' salary obligations clear to those taking work experience, placements or internships with them.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has announced new guidelines to make it clear whether these workers are eligible for the National Minimum Wage (NMW), which could make it easier for them to enforce their consumer rights.
It has made it clear that eligibility is not based on job title but on whether or not their tasks bring them within the definition of 'worker', in which case they must be paid the NMW.
Edward Davey, employment relations minister, highlighted the fact that internships and work experiences are an excellent way to bridge the gap between education and the workplace.
He said: "Fairness though is absolutely paramount with all placements. When a worker is entitled to the minimum wage, they should be paid it and we will continue to enforce the law."
Earlier this year, solicitor Simon Leyland warned the Liverpool Daily Post that the government's planned reforms to the
legal services could reduce poorer people's access to justice.
