Workers win at employment tribunal

Employment 01 Jun 2011

Workers win at employment tribunal A group of workers have won their case at an employment tribunal against Connaught, their former employer.

The group of almost 200 building workers were employed by the company in Merseyside, but were dismissed without being consulted about the decision or given any prior warning.

Now the maximum protected payout has been awarded to the 192 individuals involved by the tribunal on May 25th, where they were represented by Ucatt, a construction union.

Speaking of the ruling, Jimmy Woods, acting regional secretary of UCATT North West, said: "This is an important victory for the workers who were dismissed in the most callous manner, through no fault of their own."

He added that firms must honour the legal responsibilities they have towards those they employ and cannot get away with failing to do this.

The workers involved in the employment tribunal were hired by Connaught to work on an outsourced housing repairs and maintenance contract for One Vision, a Sefton housing association.

Recently, midwife Debbie Taylor also won a case at an employment tribunal after she said that bullying colleagues led her to quit her role, Thisissurreytoday.co.uk, reported.
