Legal advice news: RMT union boss offers opinion on employment law
Legal Services 31 Jan 2011

A union boss has spoken out about changes to
employment law, which he believes will allow bosses to "hire and fire at will", meaning that workers could require
legal help.
Bob Crow, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union, said doubling the period to qualify for an
unfair dismissal claim to two years could see employees being let go before a the time is up.
"You will have to wait two years for protection under the law with these plans and that's a green light for workers to be dumped out on the cobbles just before they get their 24 months' service under their belts," Mr Crow said.
He added this makes it appear that the government will let employers "hire and fire at will", as do this year's austerity cuts.
In addition, the Guardian said that Contact Law had experienced a 15 per cent rise in individuals looking for
legal solicitors' help in employment-related law in July 2010 compared to June of the same year.
