Legal services appeal against cuts in aid

Legal Services 25 Aug 2010

Legal services appeal against cuts in aid Legal service providers in the field of family law are appealing against cuts in government aid, on the basis they will affect the most vulnerable people in society.

The Lincolnshire Echo reports many local professionals missed out on funding, meaning of 12 family law firms practising in Lincoln and Gainsborough, only five are able to continue providing the legal service to those who cannot afford it.

Sue Westcott, assistant director of children's services at Lincolnshire County Council, backed up the concerns, stating: "It is essential for the welfare of the children concerned that families have the ability to access appropriate local legal support and representation."

And Stuart Collingham of the Lincolnshire Law Society argued the cuts could leave some areas of the country "with little or no provision".

This may apply to Gainsborough, where none of the three main law firms managed to secure ongoing funding.

The Guardian recently revealed an investigation into health and safety laws and the so-called compensation culture is expected to lead to an end to no-win-no-fee marketing on TV. ADNFCR-3248-ID-800040042-ADNFCR
