Legal services 'part of society's foundation'
Legal Services 19 Nov 2010

Legal services are part of the basis for society and must be treated with respect, one expert has stated.
Lord Neuberger, Master of the Rolls, told the Bar Conference legal services are significantly different to other provisions in society, noting high standards should be maintained at all times, reports the Financial Times.
The introduction of the so-called Tesco Law will see changes in the justice system, allowing lawyers and non-legal professionals to form associations, something many believe will improve the customer experience and drive down prices.
Services such as conveyancing and making a will could be conferred to practices where solicitors work alongside relevant individuals such as accountants or insurance experts, potentially making them more accessible for all.
Maintaining a strong justice system requires a "vibrant legal profession committed to its core values and developing innovatively within their framework", Lord Neuberger stated, saying this "provides the foundation of a society".
Some lawyers are unhappy about the new Legal Services Act, fearing it will allow new entrants into the sector and affect smaller firms.
