People protest over free legal advice cuts

Legal Services 25 Mar 2011

People protest over free legal advice cuts Protesters are set to take to the streets this weekend to campaign against government cuts to free legal services.

On Saturday March 26th, supporters of Justice for All, a group made up of advice and legal agencies, charities, trade union groups and politicians, will join the Trades Union Congress (TUC) March for the Alternative event in London.

Those taking part want to government to come up with alternatives to reducing important services, like free legal advice organisations.

"It is very important that the potentially devastating cuts to legal aid are not lost in the bigger picture of the government cuts. These proposals will dramatically undermine access to justice for the most vulnerable members of society at just the time they need help to assert their rights," Edward Kirton-Darling, a member of the Legal Action Group, which is also taking part, told the Guardian.

Marchers will assemble at the capital's Royal Courts of Justice at 10:15 GMT and will begin their protest at 10:45 GMT.

In addition, free legal services are set to be used by Pakistan cricketers Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Amir and Salman Butt as they are facing charges of cheating and corruption.
