£1m payout for record group medical negligence claim

Personal Injury 10 Nov 2010

A record group medical negligence payout is being followed by a public enquiry into the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust. A total of £1 million has been paid out in the largest-ever group medical negligence claim against a British hospital.

The Daily Telegraph reports one women blames Stafford Hospital for the deaths of three of her immediate family, after both parents and her husband died at the facility.

Heather Wilhelms, 55, stated: "They went into hospital to get the treatment and care to make them better. Instead, one by one, they came out of that place in their coffins."

Almost one hundred relatives and victims came together to lodge the medical negligence claim, as the health centre's mortality rate was significantly higher than the national average for over a decade.

Robert Francis QC carried out the inquiry into the higher-than-normal deaths, which was published early this year.

This week, a public inquiry into the "disaster" has been launched, with victims and their families angry the low level of care was able to persist for so long.
