6% fall in car accidents since 2009

The number of traffic
accident claims in the UK may have fallen, new figures showing the number of car accidents suggest.
The Department of Transport has issued data showing that there has been a six per cent fall in the number of casualties since 2009, with the total standing at 208,648.
During this period, there has been a 17 per cent drop in car accident fatalities and an eight per cent fall in the number of serious injuries on the road.
Bucking the overall trend, the number of fatalities for those on pedal cycles actually rose by seven per cent.
In five per cent of all road casualty cases, the figures show that someone involved was driving while over the legal alcohol limit, with 14 per cent of all fatalities occurring due to drink drive accidents.
Earlier this month, the government announced that it was banning the use of referral fees in car
accident compensation claims in order to drive down the cost for both the victim and the defendant, with the Ministry of Justice claiming that the old system only benefited the referral companies.
