Are lorries behind most cycle accident claims?

Personal Injury 22 Nov 2010

Cycle accident claims in London are likely to disproportionately involve lorries, after it was found they are involved in 43 per cent of fatalities. Cycle accident claims may stem disproportionately from encounters with lorries, according to a new study.

BioMed Central's recently published survey shows freight vehicles were the cause of 43 per cent of biking deaths in London between 1992 and 2006, of which 53 per cent involved the motors making a left turn.

Road.cc has called for the autos to be banned on city streets, pointing out lorries only account for four per cent of traffic in the capital, yet have a disproportionately devastating effect on non-motorised traffic.

A cycle accident claim worth £280,000 was recently won by a female biker crushed between two of the freight vehicles in London, after she suffered multiple fractures and was left unable to walk without support.

The study finds these motors are still "the biggest threat", noting: "Despite evidence for increases in the amount of cycling in London over the last 15 years, the number of cyclists who have been killed has remained constant."
