Car accident cyclist wins record £14m compensation
Personal Injury 17 Sep 2010

Compensation worth a record £14 million has been paid to a champion cyclist who was involved in a car accident while out training.
Manny Helmot raced in the 1998 Commonwealth Games, before his career was cut short when a vehicle hit him while out on his bike in November of the same year.
The largest ever accident compensation payout in Britain, the sum takes account of the fact that Mr Helmot is now registered partially blind, no longer has the use of his right arm and needs 24-hour care.
Mother Rose Helmot is his carer, having given up her job to look after the victim.
She commented: "We are really thrilled by the result of the appeal … his life was ruined, but at least we can now afford to give him the care he needs for the rest of his days," the Daily Mail reports.
Previously awarded £9 million in compensation, the amount was raised to £14 million on appeal.
