Man paralysed by work injury receives compensation
Personal Injury 09 Dec 2010

A work injury that left a man paralysed from the chest down has been compensated for by the firm in question, after one of their staff was crushed under a two-tonne reel of paper.
Christopher Shaw was employed as an assistant winder when the work accident happened in 2007 and the Health and Safety Executive claims the company failed to manage the "clear risks" of his job.
The victim's work injury compensation may be even more substantial, as the court was told the dangers of the professional practice - which saw staff manoeuvre the heavy objects using their shoulder - had been repeatedly highlighted within the firm.
Whilst attempting to move the reel, Mr Shaw slipped and was crushed, leaving him unable to live independently.
SCA Hygiene Products UK pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and was ordered to pay a fine of £120,000, as well as costs of £18,514.
