Accident lawyers have won an employee compensation after he was injured in a
work accident.
Raakeesh Patel, of Harrow, injured his right hand in a machine when working at a London bagel factory in November 2007.
As a result of the incident, Ixxy’s Bagels Ltd, of Harley Street, London, was instructed to pay costs of £9,719 and fined £2,250. The company admitted breaching Regulation 5(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
"Ixxy’s Bagels were aware of the fault on the machine, at least two days before the incident and failed to take adequate steps to protect their staff," Health and Safety Executive inspector Jack Wilby said.
The City of London Magistrates Court was told that a bagel machine was faulty as the rotating blade within it remained running even when the unit's rear doors were opened.
In another recent work accident case, B&B Group Ltd, a Wigan manufacturer, was fined £12,500 when a worker injured their hand when it became caught in a drill.
