Physicist sues hospital £5m for medical negligence

Personal Injury 25 Nov 2010

A £5 million medical negligence case is being fought by a woman who had to undergo surgery due to possible failure to spot her cervical cancer earlier. A medical negligence claim of £5 million is being brought by a woman who claims a hospital failed to spot her cervical cancer.

Helen McGlone, 30, had undergone smear tests that were interpreted as being normal, but discovered she was suffering from the disease two years later when she had a private check up.

Her medical negligence claim is based upon lost wages, having been forced to take six months off work, as well as the fact an earlier diagnosis would have made radical surgery unnecessary.

The victim had previously carried out research at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, Switzerland, having studied physics and applied maths at Glasgow University.

She also claims the enforced sick leave prevented her from pursuing a post as an investment banker, a career change that would potentially have led to a significant salary increase, a factor which may be taken into account when considering her medical negligence claim.
