Teacher wins £156,000 accident at work claim

Personal Injury 09 Nov 2010

A teacher has won an accident at work claim after her employers failed to act to prevent long-term injury. An accident at work claim has been won by former teacher Joyce Walters, whose voice was permanently damaged by her working conditions.

The victim has won almost £160,000 in damages after developing vocal nodules that led her to take a year off work in a bid to protect her voice, reports the Uxbridge Gazette.

Upon her return to work, the school failed to take measures to change the harmful environment, meaning the ex-teacher's accident at work claim was upheld in a personal injury settlement.

Additionally, an employment tribunal awarded the victim £11,000 damages out of court, the London Evening Standard Reports.

Ms Walters stated: "Teaching was my calling, I adored the classroom and miss it so much, but the problems with my voice make it impossible for me to ever go back."

Her condition makes it difficult to speak for long periods of time or raise her voice, with vocal strain leading to hoarseness and pain.
