Accident at work leads foundry to be fined £8k

A foundry has been fined £8,000 following an accident in which an employee suffered severe burns to his arms and legs.
 
Stoke-on-Trent-based Copper Alloys Ltd will also pay costs of £4,798 after it admitting breaching the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.
 
The worker is still undergoing physiotherapy following the accident and has experienced trauma that has prevented him from returning to work.
 
Grayam Barnes, inspector at the Health and Safety Executive, claimed that the incident has had a permanent and life-changing effect on the employee.
 
He explained: "This case highlights the consequences of failing to recognise dangers arising from an unfenced pit. Copper Alloys should have identified and mitigated the risk."
 
Companies must ensure suitable guard railings and covers are deployed to guarantee their workers' safety, he added.
 
Earlier this month, a girl was awarded £750 from a fairground attendant in compensation for an accident that occurred when her restraint bar failed on the Cliffhanger Miami Trip ride at a York carnival.
