Brewery fined £14,000 after work accident

Personal Injury 08 Aug 2011

Brewery fined £14,000 after work accident A Brewery in Burton on Trent has appeared in court and been fined £14,000 after three people suffered a work accident on its premises.

Cannock Magistrates Court fined Molson Coors Brewing Company (UK), of High Street, Burton on Trent and instructed the firm to pay costs of £43,674.

The company admitted to breaching Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

On June 30th 2008 three sub-contractors employed by a specialist engineering firm were carrying out maintenance work at the brewery's Station Street site when the work accident happened.

The three were hurt when a faulty valve released 6,000 litres of caustic soda, leaving the men with chemical burns.

At the court those assembled heard how appropriate personal protective equipment and adequate instructions were not given to the men.

In June health and Safety Executive inspector Mehtaab Hamid also issued a warning to employers, saying that they have a duty to give staff the training and information required so that duties are conducted safely.
