Chemical firm sentenced after work accident

Personal Injury 05 Jul 2011

Chemical firm sentenced after work accident A chemical company has appeared before magistrates after a work accident in which an employee damaged his hand.

Runcorn Magistrates Court heard Ineos Enterprises Ltd, of South Parade, Runcorn, admit to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 by failing to ensure the safety of workers.

The company, which has sites in France, Germany, the UK and Thailand, was fined £12,000 and told to contribute over £6,000 towards the cost of the prosecution.

During the work accident on September 21st 2010, an unnamed 58-year-old worker damaged his gloved hand after it became trapped in machinery.

Mhairi Duffy, investigating inspector at the Health and Safety Executive, said: "New guidance was introduced nearly six years ago on not wearing gloves while using metalworking machines, but Ineos failed to keep up to date with the latest health and safety advice."

Last month, Swancote Foods of March, Cambridgeshire, was also fined after one of its employees damaged their hand in a machine while working.
