Company fined for work accident

A firm in the West Midlands has been fined after a member of staff suffered a
work injury.
Dudley Magistrates' Court heard M I Engineering admit to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
The breach related to an incident at the company's Lye factory on June 30th last year when employee Terence Grove was involved in a
work accident.
Mr Grove, a mechanical engineer, damaged his hand when the sling on a crane he was operating to lift an angle plate snapped.
The company was instructed to pay costs of £3,321 and fined £7,500.
“All companies must ensure they manage risks in the workplace properly. It is unacceptable to rely simply on the experience of their employees," Health and Safety Executive inspector Angela Gallagher said.
Only last month a steel mill in Gateshead, Spartan UK Ltd, was also fined £40,000 after a rolling mill crushed a workers feet.
